The word revelation carries the image of “unveiling”. It describes the pulling back of curtains, to reveal what is behind them. Jesus told John to write down what He saw. The book starts with letters to real churches with real people in them who were going through real suffering and persecution. His call to them was to patiently endure.
The truths that John wrote to these churches are timeless, written to the original audience, and are there for us today.
We’re calling our study “Precedented Times”. Precedented means paralleled. Over the last few months, I’ve heard the words “unprecedented times” to describe these days amidst COVID-19, Race, Politics, and the Church. But I’m not so sure the people in these churches would call our times “unprecedented”. They would hear of our challenges and cultural moments and say, “yeah…that sounds about right. These times are very normal for the church. Expect them and remember to patiently endure.”
